Date de début

With the implementation of cultural studies perspectives on borders, the spectrum of border studies has broadened considerably. This is reflected not only in the research questions and objects but also in the research approaches. In the recently published “Handbuch Kulturwissenschaftliche ‘Studies’” (Nesselhauf and Weber 2025), Cultural Border Studies is, for the first time, systematized and presented as an interdisciplinary academic field.

The authors of the Handbook article “Cultural Border Studies,” Astrid M. Fellner and Christian Wille, teach Cultural Border Studies in the tri-national Master in Border Studies program and do research on borders from an everyday and popular culture perspective. They situate the development of Cultural Border Studies between the cultural turn in border studies and the border turn in cultural studies. They also explain the relationships to other studies and present the institutionalization of the young research field with its publication forums, leading research centers, and introductory volumes.

Finally, the authors and members of the UniGR-CBS discuss selected research topics of Cultural Border Studies and present relevant research approaches and methodologies. The handbook article concludes with current challenges in this dynamic academic field and an outlook on expected research developments.
