Future viability of cross-border cooperation

The UniGR-CBS colleagues of the International Planning Systems Department of the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern initiated and headed the working group "Border Futures – Future Viability of Cross-border Cooperation" of the Hesse/Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft of the Akademie für Raum- und Landesplanung (ARL) together with Andrea Hartz from agl Hartz ⋅ Saad ⋅ Wendl.

The aim of the working group was to explore the topic of cross-border cooperation in the light of current findings of planning-relevant border region research in the European context. On the one hand, the results were intended to be applied to the border regions covered by the Hesse/Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft. On the other hand, the experiences of the cross-border practice should be included in the expert discussion on further development of cross-border cooperation.

The working group included members of the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Hesse/Rhineland-Palatinate/Saarland and additional researchers and practitioners (from the concerned border regions). Among them were six members of the UniGR-Center for Border Studies.

The project results were published in open access in the series of annual reports of the Akademie für Raumforschung und Landesplanung (Hanover). The publication deals with the future viability of cross-border cooperation in four areas:

  • Development paths, theoretical anchor points and challenges of cross-border cooperation
  • Strategies of cross-border cooperation in the context of an integrated spatial development
  • The border area as a living space
  • Current fields of action of cross-border cooperation
