The Greater Region as a cross-border area is confronted with special challenges. In the Greater Region, a spatial development concept is to be drawn up for the entire border region. Border regions are particularly suited to establish laboratories for comparative approaches and integrative strategies of spatial planning. In these learning processes on spatial planning and spatial development, research responses to changing framework conditions can be dovetailed with social requirements.

In their research, the UniGR-CBS scientists deal with spatial challenges and planning cultures and train future planners and experts with spatial science skills in their teaching. The innovative research and teaching approaches of the researchers of the UniGR-CBS are to be made directly accessible to the practice of spatial planning and development in order to strengthen cross-border governance in the field of spatial planning and to put it on a competitive basis. Within the framework of the project, they contribute their expertise to the spatial development concept of the Greater Region (REK-GR), publish UniGR-CBS working papers under the title "Territorial Science Echo", organize network meetings with regional actors on spatial development and offer advanced training on planning cultures against the background of cross-border spatial planning.
