Statement
Date de début

The concept of multivalence represents an analytical approach to borders that focuses on inequalities and their underlying cultural ordering logics. It follows the idea that in borders social valences are inscribed that vary with respect to different people. Multivalence thus seeks to capture a social multivalence of the border, which is the product and producer of inequalities and points to the cultural orders set in motion for them.

In the eighth issue of "Borders in Perspective" (2023), the authors test the analytical approach of multivalence with examples of analysis of governance, flight, reporting, film, and literature. In six papers, they show multiple valences of borders, reconstruct the relevant ordering logics, and make an essential contribution to the further development of the concept of multivalence.
