Project – Linking Borderlands: Dynamics of Border Peripheries

Background
The border closures and increased controls in the course of the pandemic have made clear, especially in border regions, how closely the European Union is already interconnected at its territorial interfaces. Two of these interconnected areas in eastern and western Germany are in the center of this interdisciplinary joint project.

Topics
The three-year project focuses on the Greater Region SaarLorLux+ and the Brandenburg/Lebus region as zones of contact and transition at national borders. The regions show different degrees of interdependence as well as a temporal divergence of EU integration, which makes a comparison particularly fruitful in order to reach new insights in selected subject areas.

The analyses are divided into five thematic areas:

  • Policy learning (Policy Borderlands)
  • Social practice and language in the vocational training context (Communicative Borderlands)
  • Cultural negotiation processes in film (Hybrid Borderlands)
  • Planning processes (Planning Borderlands)
  • Energy supply (Energy Borderlands)

The project results become accessible to decision-makers in politics and society and thus make a practical contribution to cross-border cooperation.

Strategic Cooperation
The project is conducted under the leadership of Saarland University by border researchers from Saarland University, the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg and the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). Through this collaboration, the cooperation relations between the UniGR-Center for Border Studies and the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION are to be strengthened and strategically expanded.
