Although political orders cannot be thought of without defining borders, they have so far rarely been part of political theory-building. Especially in times of limited nation-statehood, they have long provided the framework in which central political concepts such as freedom, equality or even welfare state solidarity have been thought and discussed. They usually remained invisible in their being taken for granted. However, borders become visible at the latest when they are challenged – 2015 can be considered a symbol of this.

Julia Schulze Wessel is Managing Director and board member of anDemos – Institute for Applied Democracy and Social Research e. V. (registered association).
