Cooperation project – Lorraine, land of fronts and borders

The members of the Association of Teachers of History and Geography (Association des Professeurs d’Histoire et de Géographie) regularly holds plenary sessions as part of a thematic conference. In 2019 the association held its conference from 23 to 25 October in Metz and Nancy and worked on the theme "Lorraine, land of fronts and borders" (La Lorraine, un territoire de fronts et de frontières).

The UniGR-Center for Border Studies (UniGR-CBS) was involved in the planning of the programme in several ways. Several members of the UniGR-CBS gave presentations, organised excursions and led round table discussions or workshops:

  • 24 October, cross-border excursion: "The three borders, France, Belgium, Luxembourg" (Les trois frontières France, Belgique, Luxembourg) led by Grégory Hamez (University of Lorraine)
  • 24 October, cross-border excursion:  "The France-Saarland Border" (La frontière Franco-sarroise) led by Peter Dörrenbächer (Saarland University)
  • 25 October, talk on "Realities and representations of the border in North-Eastern France" (Réalités et représentations de la frontière dans le Nord-Est de la France) by Grégory Hamez (University of Lorraine)
  • 25 October, talk on "SaarLorLux, an integrated economic region? Economic restructuring in Lorraine, Saarland and Luxembourg" (SaarLorLux, une région d’économie intégrée ? Les restructurations économiques en Lorraine, Sarre et Luxembourg) by Peter Dörrenbächer (Saarland University)
  • 25 October, talk on "Borders and spatial identities in the SaarLorLux Greater Region" (Frontières et identités spatiales de la Grande Région SaarLorLux) by Christian Wille (University of Luxembourg)
  • 25 October, talk on "Regeneration and planning the Alzette-Belval industrial wastelands on the France-Luxembourg border: spatial justice issues" (Reconvertir et planifier les friches industrielles à la frontière franco- luxembourgeoise Alzette-Belval : Enjeux de justice spatiale) by Estelle Evrard (University of Luxembourg)
  • 25 October, workshop on "The UniGR-Center for Borders Studies and its analysis tools" (L’UniGR-Center for Borders Studies et ses outils d’analyse) led by Christian Wille (University of Luxembourg)
