Switzerland and Luxembourg are the biggest hotspots for cross-border workers in Europe, which is why in both countries academics take a greater interest in issues concerned with the cross-border labour market and workers' mobility. In the past, however, there were no structural exchanges on the subject. That is why in 2017 academics at the UniGR-Center for Border Studies invited their colleagues from Switzerland to a conference in Luxembourg. From this initiative emerged a desire to continue and intensify the exchanges in the future.

The academics therefore decided to join forces in 2018 in a German-French-Swiss research group, "LABOR SwissLux – Labour Across Borders". The group currently consists of ten researchers, who exchange regularly, present their results at conferences and conduct joint projects. The first results of their cooperation were published under the leadership of Isabelle Pigeron-Piroth and Christian Wille in the second issue of the UniGR-CBS themed journal "Borders in Perspective": Les travailleurs frontaliers au Luxembourg et en Suisse: Emploi, Quotidien et Perceptions (Cross-border workers in Luxembourg and Switzerland: Employment, Daily Life and Perceptions)
