Successful kick-off: The first forum Greater Region of the UniGR-Center for Border Studies
On 7 June 2018, the first “Greater Region” forum on the subject of “Cross-border employee mobility as a resource for the Greater Region” took place at the House of the Greater Region (Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg) as part of the Interreg VA Greater Region project “UniGR-Center for Border Studies” with the participation of the Minister of Labor and Employment of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Nicolas Schmit. It was the kick-off event to a series of six public podium discussions dealing with current topics in border studies and intended to offer a platform for interregional dialog between citizens, decision-makers and experts in the field.
The organizers – this time the University of Luxembourg (Isabelle Pigeron-Piroth) with the Université de Lorraine and the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern – were delighted to have a very successful kick-off with a full house. Over 70 participants from the scientific, institutional and social fields were privy to a well-structured and very informative discussion evening expertly moderated by Prof. Dr. Rachid Belkacem from the Université de Lorraine.
The contributions dealt with cross-border employee mobility as a resource for the Greater Region, with the associated economic, demographic and environmental challenges also being considered.
The Minister emphasized the impacts of cross-border work on the entire economy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and raised current issues, such as that of a Greater Regional citizenship. He also reiterated the importance of such forums for exchanging information on topics and problems concerning all citizens.
The next round table discussion takes place on 7 November 2018 on "Realities and perspectives of cross-border mobility in education".
